Jodi No.1

Rani Mukerji,Shah Rukh Khan (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna)

“This is a special award and I am glad to receive it. It is so appropriate that I should win it with Shah Rukh Khan for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna a film about love and relationships. I look forward to doing some more projects with Shah Rukh in the coming year. After all we are the Jodi No. 1!” - Rani Mukerji

Best Actor (Male)

Subodh Bhave
Mission Champion

“Since the last four years I have been nominated for by various awards, but this is my first trophy and so the Screen award is indeed very special. It’s as if I am climbing the dahi handi, human pyramid on Gokul Asthami for four years and falling down just near the summit and finally making it to the top and cracking the pot!” - Subodh Bhave

Best Film

Savalee
Shivendu Aggarwal

“This being my first film and first award, I am completely overwhelmed with joy! I dedicate this award to my father veteran film producer Late GD Aggarwal, who launched BR Chopra way back. We are making a comeback in showbiz after four decades and I wanted to start with a small yet sensible and creative film. So I made this Marathi-Konkani bilingual. Which deals with the professional conflict between a mother and daughter - both classical singers.” - Shivendu Aggarwal

Best Director

Sumitra Bhave, Sunil Sukhthankar
Nital

“We are very happy because such special efforts are being rewarded this way. It is gratifying that our work has been recognised when 100 films were in the running. Marathi cinema is going in a great direction not only technically but also in terms of exploring so many diverse themes. Sunil and I form a great team and we jointly handle direction, script, lyrics, costumes and even the sets for our films! The film revolved around the social outrage against people with a vitiligo condition and it stresses that it is not a disease at all but malfuntion of pigmentation.” Sumitra Bhave

This is our fourth Screen award, and our past awards include a hat-trick. Screen awards are very important, not because we have won it again but because we feel that they are very objective.” - Sunil Sukhthankar

Best Actor (Female)

Vandana Gupte
Maatichya Chuli

“This is a special award for many reasons. Firstly because it is being given by Screen, which is like a heritage publication, and is the Bible of Hindi film industry. Secondly, I had a fabulous role in Maatichya Chuli which is really a well-directed movie. I am very happy that Marathi films are picking out profound subjects like this one.

Credit is due to the director and the writer of the film. It was totally producer Mahesh Manjrekar’s film. As Marathi cinema is striding ahead I feel next year Screen will have to institute technical awards for Marathi films also. They deserve the recognition for their efforts.” - Vandana Gupte

Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female)
Kirron Kher (Rang De Basanti)

“Honestly I never expected it! My category had the most correct nominations and they were all good performers. I would have been genuinely happy if the Jury had given all five nominees a trophy each.

Screen awards have really brought all the cheer to the new year, two of my most favourite films - Rang De Basanti and Omkara - were leading the nomination list.

I am honoured to receive the Screen golden statuette, this is my second one. The earlier one was for anchoring Purushkshetra. Screen awards, I reiterate, are the fairest of them all.” - Kirron Kher

Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male)
Arshad Warsi (Lage Raho Munnabhai)

“This is my first recognized award as an actor and I wish there were more women in the audience! Jokes apart, I must thank Amitji and Jayaji for giving me a break and to Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani for bringing me back when my career had all but finished. Any great work for an actor is all about co-stars and I must thank Sanjay Dutt for being what he is and my other co-artistes like Boman Irani and Vidya Balan.

It took me my second turn as Circuit to get an acting award, and my faith in awards has been rekindled just when I was giving up hope. I think that I did have an edge this time because my character had a little more depth and meaning - so apart from the entertainment factor my character had more value in the story that helped me do better.” - Arshad Warsi

Best Background Music
A R Rahman (Rang De Basanti)

“I am happy that my contribution in the film has been recognised. I could not attend the Awards Nite as it was my birthday. But this was a surprise birthday gift.” - AR Rahman

Best Music
Vishal Bhardwaj (Omkara)

“This is not just my first Screen award but also my first-ever award for Best Music, so I feel that I have been accepted. It is however quite ironical that I had to turn a director and make three films to get an award as a composer, because I felt strongly that I deserved it for Maachis.

This time I also attempted to mix more of mass appeal with my own style, probably because I was burning from within to prove myself. That is why I also consider my music very vigorous and - yes, violent!

After this award, I must be careful not to let this success go to my head and I must thank my programmer Clinton, my arranger Hitesh and Stephen Fritz, one of the best in the field, who did the final mixing in London.” - Vishal Bhardwaj

Best Story
Rajkumar Hirani/Abhijat Joshi (Lage Raho Munnabhai)

“Though no one works with the idea of getting awards, any art form thrives on appreciation like this. The good thing with Lage Raho Munnabhai was the combination of appreciation and popular endorsement. Abhijat Joshi is also very special to me - because the story and script of this film was written across e-mails from Madh Island in Mumbai to Ohio, across the time zones of day and night in India and in the USA!” - Rajkumar Hirani

Best Screenplay
Rensil D’Silva, Rakeysh Mehra (Rang De Basanti)

“Oh sure, we were very much expecting the award. We have given best of our last three years to the screenplay. It worked because it was an honestly told screenplay through contemporary narrative and then Rakeysh did the rest.” - Rensil D’Silva

Best Dialogue
Rajkumar Hirani (Lage Raho Munnabhai)

“This is really great. Munnabhai was a film that got so much appreciation and popular response too. Let me just say that I am glad that there are e-mails! We couldn’t have done it without you Bapu, this (trophy) is for you.” - Rajkumar Hirani

Best Art Direction
Samir Chanda (Rang De Basanti)

“I have been nominated so often that finally winning the Screen award for my work makes me now think that the grapes are not always sour! It was simply great working on the film and I give a lot of credit to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra for the perfect teamwork that he achieved between me, the director of cinematography and the visual effects team. RDB was a challenge because we had to mix the contemporary with the period aspects.” - Samir Chanda

Best Special Effects
Prasad-EFX (Krrish)

“I am elated. I’m also quite nervous..I can’t imagine we really managed to get it, thanks to the highly spirited and talented team of Prasad EFX. We would like to thank Rakesh Roshan for giving us the opportunity to be associated with Krrish.” - Rajiv Ranganathan, Head of Production, Prasad EFX, Mumbai

Best Choreography
Shiamak Davar (Dhoom 2)

“I am absolutely honoured! Thank you Screen. I like to infuse my work with an element of novelty. My film choreography has to be exciting. Hrithik is a natural artiste and his hard work helped hugely. Last time I won the Screen trophy for Dil To Pagal Hai and then I had Madhuri and Karisma dancing for me. So the choreographer is only as good as his dancers. I always feel challenged to do new, exciting work and this award inspires me to follow my instict with a renewed zeal.” - Shiamak Davar

Best Action
Tony Ching Siu Tung, Sham Kaushal (Krrish)

“It’s an amazing feeling. It takes guts and much more to visualize a film on this canvas and for Rakesh (Roshan)ji it was at three levels - as producer, as director and as father, knowing the demanding requisites of the film’s action. Let me also say that this award would also not have been possible without Hrithik Roshan’s complete commitment to nothing less than perfection. Today, I am missing my colleague, Tony Ching.” - Sham Kaushal

Best Film
Lage Raho Munnabhai, Vidhu Vinod Chopra

“LRM was a co-operative effort, it feels so grand that what we produced with conviction has been lauded by everyone. Bole to I give away the Jodi No.1 award to Munna-Circuit.” - Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Best Director
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Rang De Basanti)

“Thank you Screen for this honour! A film like RDB - you don’t make it, it happens to you once in a lifetime. I thank Kamlesh (Pandey) for starting it all, thank you Rensil (D’Silva) for making it what it was. The writers are my heroes. I thank Ronnie (Screwvala). He supported us when no one else was prepared to back the film. And above all, I thank the Almighty for choosing me to make this film!” - Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Best Actor (Male)
Hrithik Roshan (Krrish)

“Please do not misunderstand but I cannot bring myself to celebrate on a platform which does not acknowledge my dad - really sad. Anyway, I hold no grudges whatsoever.” - Hrithik Roshan via SMS

Best Actor (Female)
Kareena Kapoor (Omkara)

“Vishal (Bhardwaj) this is your award. Thank you for having the faith in me. Thank you Mom, Lolo and Shahid for your love and support. Thank you Bhawana (Somaaya) for making my dream come true. Dolly Mishra is the most treasured role for me. Dolly came alive through Vishal’s vision and through her oft-repeated line in the film, “Hum to tumhare hain ji…” - Kareena Kapoor

Best Actor in a Negative Role (Male/Female)
Saif Ali Khan (Omkara)

“I was very lucky to get the part of Langda Tyagi. I thank the technical team of Omkara for creating the right atmosphere where I could pitch in my best. Thank you Vishal (Bhardwaj) for writing such a great part. I am grateful to the audience who have been most encouraging in saying the most embarrasingly nice things about both Langda and me.” - Saif Ali Khan

Best Actor in a Comic Role (Male/Female)Shreyas Talpade (Dor)

“I am very, very happy because the competition was very tough. I particularly loved Tusshar’s performance in Golmaal - Fun Unlimited.

I was appreciated for the mimicry of various stars by my character of behroopia. This was possible because I used to do mimicry during my college days and Nagesh Kukunoor came to know of this while we were shooting for Iqbal. He thought of using this skill in Dor and told me to begin practising it when he conceived the film.” - Shreyas Talpade

Best Playback Singer (Male)
Shaan, ‘Chand sifarish…’ - Fanaa]

“It feels wonderful. As I said when I was nominated, this is not just a song that was appreciated but was predicted to be an award-worthy one. The overall quality of the lyrics and the music must have won over the jury, though the popular acclaim also made my award non-controversial! The hard work that Jatinji, Lalitji and I put in has paid off, and I am sure that since my wife was with me at the show I would have been disappointed if I had not won!” - Shaan

Best Playback Singer (Female)
Sunidhi Chauhan , ‘Beedi jalayale…’ - Omkara

“For an artiste it is a beautiful feeling to receive an award. I did not expect this one as I thought I would just perform at the awards and go, which was fine because I am quite used to not getting awards. But I’m glad that this time it was otherwise. The credit definitely goes to Vishalji, because he had told me, “Just sing the way you want.” As for the composition and Gulzarsaab’s lyrics - I am too small to comment on his talent.” - Sunidhi Chauhan

Best Lyrics
Gulzar , ‘Beedi jalayale…’ - Omkara

“I am thankful to the Jury for choosing me for this coveted trophy, but I still maintain that I deserved it more for ‘O saathi re….’ Be as it may, I am glad to be the winner. I had all intention of attending the gala and had managed to fly back from the interiors of Orissa, but a family tragedy held me back.

My daughter Meghna accepted the award on my behalf and she was really thrilled about it. But I missed Javedsaab’s terrific lyrics in Umrao Jaan among the nominations.” - Gulzar

Best Editing
Rajkumar Hirani (Lage Raho Munnabhai)

“Wow! It can’t get any better than this. Editing is my home turf and I am very comfortable exercising this aspect even if i have written and directed the film. As I am trained in editing, I tend to do most of the editing at the scripting and shooting level itself. This has truly been a great year.” - Rajkumar Hirani

Best Sound
Nakul Kamte (Rang De Basanti)

“This is my second Screen trophy! This one comes as a huge bonus for me. I spearheaded the trend of on-location sound with Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai and now everybody knows that sync-sound is not just a fluke. I never work with awards in mind but it feels great when you receive one. I am particularly proud of the climax scene of RDB which shows a visibly shaken Sharman - it was shot in Jaipur and there was too much local noise and I thought we may have to dub it. But I managed to clean it up.” - Nakul Kamte

Best Cinematography
Binod Pradhan (Rang De Basanti)

“I am extremely delighted - every time I get an award, I feel that I have won for the first time. I must credit this award to Rakeysh (Mehra) who inspired all of us to give our best.” - Binod Pradhan

Most Promising Newcomer (Male)
Siddharth (Rang De Basanti)

(In the US) “Thank you for the honour, this is for my first Hindi film.” - Siddharth

Most Promising Newcomer (Female)
Kangana Ranaut (Gangster/Woh Lamhe…)

“It is not shocking that I won, remember only a month ago I was declared the Best Newcomer in Asia. But this trophy makes me happy…this is my first award in India. It gives me a reason to celebrate. It also inspires me to do good films and give good performances.” - Kangana Ranaut

Most Promising Debut Director
Saket Chaudhary (Pyar Ke Side/Effects)

“Elated! I am really happy. I attribute this award to patience - waiting for a long time to make my film and then finally getting it released. That’s always an honour. It was also because it has been a very good year in Hindi filmmaking… different films, different scripts have all been honoured, so I’m a part of that. And that’s pretty good. I did not anticipate getting an award because there were very good films in my category. I loved Kabul Express and also Khosla Ka Ghosla. I thought they were, if not better, really good films. So it is an honour… it’s an honour for all of us to be in the same category.” - Saket Chaudhary
